Pattern Definition

  • a repeated decorative design.
  • a regular and intelligible form or sequence discernible in the way in which something happens or is done.
I like the perspective the picture is taken from as the height of the image taken shows a pattern that from the ground is not visible.

I like the closeness that the image is taken as it shows off the pattern in more detail.

I like the way the photograph is taken closely and the way the animal's head is at an angle to the body which contrasts the pattern of their skin.
The mass of the ladybirds make an irregular pattern as it shows off the diversity of nature.

  • My definition; a repeated or irregular sequence of similar shapes in an arranged design.

Reflection Definition

  • The throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it.
  • Although not strictly a formal element, reflection is an important consideration in framing a composition and establishing balance.
  • Although we can take a literal definition of perspective on the term reflection, we should also review reflection in a wider abstract perspective.
Own definition of reflection: an image that is seen that is seen as 2 pictures, one seen normally and one seen in a shiny surface that captures and throws out light and therefore another picture is created.

This picture shows a couple and the sky in the reflection of a pair of glasses on the sand, the light from the glasses is also reflected onto the sand next to the glasses.

This picture shows the reflection of a man in the water on a platoon out in the sea, the reflection of the water also shows the sky, the figure and the object he is standing on.

This picture shows the reflection of the sky, clouds and mountains, the colours are darker in the reflection but also clear and crisp in colour.

This picture shows the reflection of a man standing on the sand, it also shows the sky and the pier of the beach, the image is almost symmetrical and and very similar in colour.

Shape Definition

shape definition-

  • the external form, contours, or outline of someone or something.
  • a geometric figure such as a square, triangle, or rectangle.
i like the angle that the picture is taken from as it makes the shapes seem different, the min subject of the photo is the triangular shaped building which changes the way we view the other shapes.

i like the angle of the shot as it really emphasizes the circular shape and the reoccurring pattern of the round shapes they seem to get smaller as the distance of the image increases.

the shape of the building is shown by the angle of the shot as the space beyond the top of the building is a blank shape which is formed from the angle its been taken from.

in the picture the shape of the diameter of the pole is first visible and then the other shapes are seen: the length and mass of the shapes are also seen.

  • My definition: shape is the form and lines which makeup an external object, it can be any number of sides or volume.

Shape Image Bank

This image is effective; the way in which one shape being a rectangular note can make up and arrange to create a whole different shape, this makes for an interesting image, as all the notes come together to make a circular pattern. This shows off the manipulation of shape and the versatility of one type of shape.

I love this image, as darkness can give a really cool effect as in this image the light has been used in this shot to cast a shadow over the camels, this is what makes them appear black in contrast to the bright red sky as the backdrop, this works beautifully to show off the shape of the animals against the light, this is a really effective and useful technique that photographers use.

For this image, the manipulation of shape is being used, lots of  round shaped candles have been used to put together a new shape being a heart, this is very effective in showing how placement of random shapes can create totally new ones. The image can also come across as being very symbolic.

This image is of a building, I love the angle that the picture is taken from as it creates impression as to where the picture is taken from in the building and what part is it showing in the building? But from the angle the shape is very interesting as two strong parallel lines run up the middle of the picture and lots of lines are on the ceiling of the building. The lines that meet the lines on the top of the building, create an interesting shape and angle.

The form of natural things such as animals can make for interesting subjects as in nature shapes vary and are irregular. In this image a birds feathers are shot, these make for a very interesting subject as the shape of the feathers are in a re-occurring natural pattern, all the feathers are very similar shapes and this is why natural form makes for such an interesting shot.
The photographer that has taken this picture has used darkness and light to create a shape in the human form that doesn't exist, this is very effective and interesting to look at. In the picture the sun is behind two people and so from the angle of the shot they appear black as a shadow has been cast on them and so little detail is shown creating the effect of one silhouette of a person with 4 arms.

Shape Contact Sheet

Brandt Female Form

Brandt takes pictures of women, in his pictures he objectives the female form, nudity is often the main subject of his images and the way the shape of the female form makes shape. many people would see the images as very sexualised and provocative, however i see them purely as nudity and the form of the body to depict shape and the way light portrays shape. he creates abstract geometrical form in this image however he often represents the body as a landscape. this is art as it opens ones awareness to the context of shape and the female form.

Shape Brandt

Brandt uses negative space as a stark contrast to the woman's skin and body, the dark part of the image is her her hair and the space she does not make up in the picture this makes the shape of the image stand out as the white part of the image is where ones eyes are
immediately drawn to and therefore the shape is the first thing we notice about the image. the composition of the image is interesting because there are only two distinct colours in the picture apart from the difference in tone but because black and white are the first colours you see it makes the picture more interesting in tone and composition.

Tone Contact Sheet

Tone Definition

Definition of tone:

This refers to the lightness and darkness of something. This could be a shade or how dark or light a colour appears. tones are created by the way light falls on a 3d object. toe can be used to express gender as lighter tones are used to suggest felinity, whereas darker tones can be used to enforce masculinity.

Mind map:

  • people
  • bricks
  • flowers
  • pavement
  • buildings
  • clothing
  • clouds

I like the perspective of the shot because it shows of the difference in colour and tone as the bottle top is a different colour to the rest of the bottle and so contrasts.

The difference in tone between the sky and the fields contrasts really well as the shot is taken from the normal perspective of someone, the tone varies and changes.

I love the way the tone is fairly balanced apart from the main subject being the tree moving through the image with its long dark limbs.

The tone of this image varies, on the far side of her face the tone is darker this gives the effect of that being the end of her face apart from her hair which makes the couples faces merge together much more in tone.

  • My definition: tone is different shades of colour which change in lightness and darkness and the way that the depth of the colour appears and falls on a physical object.

Texture Image Bank

This picture is effective in showing texture as the surface of the wall is shown very well through the focus and clarity of the image, i love how the change in tones occur through the change in rock this shows range of texture and surface.
This picture is great in showing texture because the light illuminates the ridges of all the lines and makes the lines cast a shadow on either side of the ridge, this makes the texture of the lines very visible to see and effective in showing the changes in this formal element.

I love how the whole of the picture is in focus and so the all the different texture of the rocks are easy to see, and there is not one particular main subject apart from perhaps the biggest shell, but all the rocks and shells' different textures are visible.
I love the way that two different coloured crocodiles lay by the side as both have a very similar if not the same texture and yet the colours contrast and work so well together.
The angle of the shot brings out the contrast in texture as the steps look to have a smooth texture like granite and the wall has lines carved into it, which gives the impression of sandstone etc. The light that beams on the wall in the picture emphasizes the roughness and coarse texture of the wall.
The angle of this shot is great in showing the positioning of the material as the bricks jutt out and from the angle it is possible to see this, it also means that the shot is in great clarity and the texture of the brickwork is easily seen, the lighting of this shot also really helps to improve detail of texture,
