Landscape Definition

Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes. 



This image is bright and full of colour, the main subject being the windmill works well against the background of the meadow merging into the horizon, the dark colours opt the windmill therefore contrast well with the colourful backdrop.


This image has rule of thirds, which means the composition of the image has quite an even and equal distribution in structure of image , the image is bright and has a reflection, and good symmetry.


this image has clearly been taken at exactly the right moment. The symmetry that the road creates makes the balance of the trees perfectly equal on each side Also the persceptive of the image draws the viewers eye into the road due to the angle and placement of the trees

Urban photography is shot in this landscape piece, when looking at this shot, you are automatically drawn to the leading lines of the building and centre line on the floor, the angle of the shot is great as it changes perspective by looking up.

Landscape photography- is the capturing of natural or man-made settings and environments, to document a place.

Composite Image/ Photo-Manipulation Definition

Compositing is the combining of visual elements from separate sources into single images, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene.

Photo manipulation is a process to transform a photograph into a desired image. There are currently many different software applications to choose from ranging from professional applications to basic imaging software for the casual user.

 Photo manipulation- this image is a really creative idea, the symbolism is very strong and inventive in this image, i like how realistic the image comes across, the fist coming out of the phone clearly shows a violent relationship and the impact then reaches the woman.

 This image is a very comical display of image manipulation, the mans being enlarged very in-proportionately this is a very interesting image to look at, the contrast of the mans normal sized body to the head is a really great idea.

 All the different photos that make this composite image is really intricate and detailed, the concept is really and effective in showing different elements all come together.

The same person being used multiple times gives an interesting effect, all the photo's that come together to make up this composite image are really well constructed as they all look really convincing in portraying a scene.

My own definition: The ordering and assembling of different photos to make one collective image.

Documentary Photography Defintion

Definition- Documentary photography usually refers to a popular form of photography used to chronicle both significant and relevant to history and historical events and everyday life. It is typically covered in professional photojournalism, or real life reportage, but it may also be an amateur, artistic, or academic pursuit.

 In this image, it clearly shows a vulture stalking a starved child, waiting for it to die, this graphic shot is a great documentary piece as it shows off the true nature of starvation in certain countries.

 In this image, the picture is documenting hobo's travelling across America, this is a great shot as it shows off the reality of what hobo's go to, to actually travel, it shows them in a moving train this is a very revealing picture.

 This image shows off the reality of poverty, this is a great documentary piece as it shows off how poverty affects children this makes it very truthful and exposing as you can see in the image how dirty the area he is squatting in is, and how poor he is with the clothes that he is wearing.

This image shows off what it was like for the workers in New York during the early 1900's building skyscrapers, this is a great documentary piece as it shows off their everyday situation and their means to stay alive and provide a living, this highlights the danger of this type of work.

My own definition of documentary photography; documentary photography is the capturing of history, historical contexts and everyday life, this can be shot by anyone as an artistic pursuit, pastime etc but is also a professional career.

Texture Definition

For the purposes of this article, texture photography is any imagery that depends, at least partly, for its impact on the texture of the objects in the image. Texture will be definedas the surface detail of an object.

I like the close up of this mat as it really shows an intricate detailed view of the mat, it shows all the different strands coming off it and really shows of the pattern.

In this picture you can see the different types of texture, you can see the smooth flat texture of the water and the smooth and bumpy texture of the tiles this shows a lot of variation in texture.














This image is really cool in showing the texture of all the different shoe imprints in the sand, the sand is a really great medium for showing the detail in texture.

This close up of the elephant from front on beautifully shows off the texture of its face and the changes that are throughout it, from the angle there is lots of detail to be seen, the dry, rough, lined texture face of the elephant is shown very well.

Colour Definition

              colour definition: Color photography is photography that uses media capable of reproducing colors. By contrast, black-and-white (monochrome) photography records only a single channel of luminance (brightness) and uses media capable only of showing shades of gray.

This image is great in showing the vibrance and
difference in colour, this picture has been photo
shopped and so the most have colourful part being
the sweets have been left with colour.






This image was taken with a long exposure, the bright colour of the light appearing as yellow captures the movement of light which portrays a shape.

This image is bright and full of lots of different colours, the lights up close are blurred and makes the colours look large and bold, this gives a really cool blurred effect.








I love this image because the colour that your automatically drawn to is the yellow from the tram and this is emphasized by the way that all the surroundings are white and grey this is a perfect shot showing off how colour draws in one.

My own definition: Colour photograpy is the way in which media technology portrays a colour ie monochrome or in full colour spectrum.

Portraiture Definition

Portrait photography or portraiture is photography of a person or group of people that displays the expression, personality, and mood of the subject. Like other types of portraiture, the focus of the photograph is usually the person's face, although the entire body and the background or context may be included.

 I love how the baby is clearly a native to the environment that she has been captured in and the lighting is all natural and illuminates her face, this makes for  a great depiction of her face.

 I like how the picture is a closeup  of her face, this image is clearly photo-shopped but i love the clarity and the contrast of light and dark colours.

 I love how natural this image is and the angle that she is sitting to the camera and how the backdrop, her eyes and her top are all matching in colour.

I love how effective the angle of this picture is so effective in showing a different perspective of the woman, i also love how simple it looks from it just being black and white.



My own definition: portraiture is the photography of a person or a group of people, it is taken to show expression of the person.

Joiners Definition

Definition- is a photographic technique in which one picture is assembled from several overlapping photographs. This can be done manually with prints or by using digital image editing software.

 The image is effective in showing different tones through the placement of images, i love the placement of the pictures to create a long stream of image.

 I like the difference in perspective in the picture from the arrangement of the shapes, the different angles of his head for example are excellent in showing variation in perspective.

 The space and texture of the man against the landscape is well presented by the positioning of the images, it creates a dynamic of lots of different layers and is really cool to look at.









The arrangement of the pictures recreates the entire shape of a chair, the original picture that have have been cut up to create this new chair come together to give an interesting shape.


My own definition: The arrangement of images to recreate a picture including the rearrangement of shapes and perspectives etc.

Depth definition

Depth definition- In optics, particularly as it relates to film and photography, depth of field (DOF), also called focus range or effective focus range, is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image.

I love this image because the only part that is in focus is the front of the moped and the rest if the image is out of focus and the lights of the cars blur out.

I like this picture because the whole of the picture is more or less in focus, all of the image is clear and visible even at the front of the image with the moving water it focuses the front and the movement.








I love this image because the main body of the woman is unfocused and merges into the subtle dark changes of tone, the backdrop is also the same colour as her skin. Her hand is the only thing in focus this is really effective in showing depth of field.












I love this picture because the bubble is the only thing
that is in focus and all the colors in the background merge together beautifully.

My own definition: depth of field is a point of perspective in which  a part of an image is in focus and another part is not.

Movement Definition

The act or an instance of moving; a change in place or position.
 Components of movement photography:

• shutter
• aperture
• iso
• international standards organisation 

I love how the image is in black and white as the change in colour shows the changes in movement.










I love how this picture was captured with a long shutter speed as the movement of the train is shown and clearly spans over a long time within the image.

All the light merges into one long windy line down the road this shows the effect of movement as this is the route that all the cars have to take to go on the roads.

I like how the two subjects being the biker and cyclist are in focus but the backdrop is not, this shows off movement.

My own definition: movement photography is the effect of capturing movement within an image it is presented through many different techniques in showing this element.

Pattern Definition

• a repeated decorative design.
• a regular and intelligible form or sequence discernible in the way in which something happens or is done.

I like the perspective the picture is taken from as the height of the image taken shows a pattern that from the ground is not visible.

I like the closeness that the image is taken as it shows off the pattern in more detail.

I like the way the photograph is taken closely and the way the animal's head is at an angle to the body which contrasts the pattern of their skin.

The mass of the ladybirds make an irregular pattern as it shows off the diversity of nature.

• My definition; a repeated or irregular sequence of similar shapes in an arranged design.

Reflection Definition

• The throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it.
• Although not strictly a formal element, reflection is an important consideration in framing a composition and establishing balance.
• Although we can take a literal definition of perspective on the term reflection, we should also review reflection in a wider abstract perspective.

Own definition of reflection: an image that is seen that is seen as 2 pictures, one seen normally and one seen in a shiny surface that captures and throws out light and therefore another picture is created.





This picture shows a couple and the sky in the reflection of a pair of glasses on the sand, the light from the glasses is also reflected onto the sand next to the glasses.

This picture shows the reflection of a man in the water on a platoon out in the sea, the reflection of the water also shows the sky, the figure and the object he is standing on.









This picture shows the reflection of the sky, clouds and mountains, the colours are darker in the reflection but also clear and crisp in colour.













 This picture shows the reflection of a man standing on the sand, it also shows the sky and the pier of the beach, the image is almost symmetrical and and very similar in colour.

Shape Definition

shape definition-

• the external form, contours, or outline of someone or something.
• a geometric figure such as a square, triangle, or rectangle.

i like the angle that the picture is taken from as it makes the shapes seem different, the min subject of the photo is the triangular shaped building which changes the way we view the other shapes.








i like the angle of the shot as it really emphasizes the circular shape and the reoccurring pattern of the round shapes they seem to get smaller as the distance of the image increases.







the shape of the building is shown by the angle of the shot as the space beyond the top of the building is a blank shape which is formed from the angle its been taken from.









in the picture the shape of the diameter of the pole is first visible and then the other shapes are seen: the length and mass of the shapes are also seen.

• My definition: shape is the form and lines which makeup an external object, it can be any number of sides or volume.

Tone Definition

Definition of tone:

This refers to the lightness and darkness of something. This could be a shade or how dark or light a colour appears. tones are created by the way light falls on a 3d object. toe can be used to express gender as lighter tones are used to suggest felinity, whereas darker tones can be used to enforce masculinity.

I like the perspective of the shot because it shows of the difference in colour and tone as the bottle top is a different colour to the rest of the bottle and so contrasts.







The difference in tone between the sky and the fields contrasts really well as the shot is taken from the normal perspective of someone, the tone varies and changes.

I love the way the tone is fairly balanced apart from the main subject being the tree moving through the image with its long dark limbs.

The tone of this image varies, on the far side of her face the tone is darker this gives the effect of that being the end of her face apart from her hair which makes the couples faces merge together much more in tone.

• My definition: tone is different shades of colour which change in lightness and darkness and the way that the depth of the colour appears and falls on a physical object.
